At Duck Down Guide Service we have access to over 3,0000 acres of private land that is nestled in the heart of Arkansas world famous Grand Prairie. You will not find another outfitter operating exclusively on more private property than we do. That fact alone is one of the biggest keys to our success. Another fact that should be considered when choosing a duck hunting guide in the Stuttgart, AR area is convenience. Duck Down is conveniently located just a short 15 minute drive to the west of the “Duck & Rice Capitol of the the World” Stuttgart, AR. And only a mile or so North of the largest wildlife management area in the state, Bayou Meto W.M.A. Bayou Meto is the only W.M.A. in the state that is managed specifically for ducks. Hundreds of thousands of ducks inhabit Bayou Meto’s 33,000 acres of flooded timber. When the season opens thousands of hunters from Arkansas and from states all over the country flock to this world famous public hunting area to hunt ducks. The constant hunting pressure will cause the ducks to fly out seeking refuge in the nearby fields of our farm and others that are close by. This is why our location is key is the key to our success at Duck Down Guide Service.

Come hunt the “Golden Triangle of Duck Country…..

When you are hunting at Duck Down Guide Service in Stuttgart, Arkansas, you are hunting in what is known as “the golden triangle” of Arkansas duck country, it is considered to be the very best area in the state because of the more than 2 million migrating waterfowl that call this area their home for the winter. This area is the area that you read about, it is the area that is talked about, it is the spot you want to be if you are hunting ducks in The Natural State. Duck hunting doesnt get much better than what we have here at Duck Down Guide Service.
Duck Down Guide Service hunts the northern half of a 6,050 acre farm that is privately owned by the Henderson family. The Henderson’s purchased this remarkable piece of property in the early 1950’s. At the time it was purchased, it was the largest land transaction in Southeast Arkansas history. The property is known as the Willey farm to the locals , and is a proven area, known for the number of ducks that take refuge here during the winter and for the quality of the hunts that have been experienced here over the years.

About Buckshot Duck Lodge

Buckshot Duck Lodge was established in August of 2000 by three families residing in Gillett, Arkansas. The purpose in constructing the 10,000 square foot facility is two fold. The primary reason was to provide luxury lodging during duck season for hunters and guests across the nation. Its second purpose was to allow private rental for various social functions, such as reunions, parties, weddings, retreats and corporate events.

Greg has found a successful way to utilize his farmland year ’round, especially during duck season. Buckshot Duck Lodge provides quality waterfowl hunting experiences for all guests. It allows the owners to enjoy their favorite sport in the process. Thus far, it has proven to be beneficial for all involved.

Owners Jimmy & Sherry Hackney have both been actively involved in the Gillett School and community after they were married in 1972. In that same year, Jimmy became head of Hackney Farms, maintaining the tradition. In 1972 they had their first of three sons, Greg, an owner of Buckshot. Sons Chris and Josh followed in 1974 and 1979. Chris and his wife, Chastity live in Cabot with their two children. Josh and his wife, Oksana, live in Little Rock with their son. In 1986 a farming accident confined Jimmy to a wheelchair, but did not interrupt his farming duties or hunting opportunities. He loves all types of outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing, and says that “You should always duck hunt on the ‘Dark of the moon”.Jimmy and Sherry both cook full time at the lodge. Sherry cooks breakfast, lunch and dinner. Jimmy is famous for his duck gumbo, camp stew and red beans and rice. They have five grandchildren: Codi, Callie, Jack, Ben, and James.

Owners Greg & Julie Hackney both attended Gillett High School and spent summers working on the family farms of each of their fathers. Both Julie and Greg attended The University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Greg majored in Agricultural Business and Julie “Gordon” earned her degree in Speech-Language Pathology. The two were married in November of 1997 and are now proud parents of their sons, Jack and Ben Hackney. Greg, Owner of Hackney Farms, is a member of Gillett Farmers and Businessman’s Club and a Chairman in the Gillett / Tichnor Duck’s Unlimited Chapter. Julie works part-time as a speech-therapist at Gillett school. The family is very involved in community, school and church activities. The Hackneys feel very blessed to live in Gillett and to be able to share the beauty of this area with others. This summer Greg and Matt Lowe (duck guide) coached their sons’ little league baseball team. The Buckshot team placed 2nd in the division.

Breeding Duck Numbers Remain High!

Abundant precipitation boosts breeding pair estimates again.

The 2015 Trends in Duck Breeding Populations report released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) indicates another strong year for waterfowl populations. The report is based on surveys conducted in May and early June by USFWS, Canadian Wildlife Service, and several state agency biologists. Overall duck numbers in the survey area are statistically similar to last year and remain high. Total populations were estimated at 49.5 million breeding ducks in the surveyed area. This estimate represents an 1-percent increase from last year’s estimate of 49.2 million birds, and is 43 percent higher than the 1955-2014 long-term average. “We are fortunate to see continued high overall duck populations in North America’s breeding areas this year,” said DU CEO Dale Hall. “Though conditions were dry in some important habitats, we had large numbers of birds returning this spring and good conditions in the Boreal Forest and other areas of Canada. It looks like some typical prairie nesters skipped over the U.S. prairies and took advantage of good conditions farther north. This is an important reminder about the vital need for maintaining abundant and high-quality habitat across the continent. The Boreal Forest, especially, can provide important habitat when the prairies are dry. But the Boreal is under increasing threats from resource extraction.”
